‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Spinoff in Works
admin - May 9, 2022 Alerts , Crazy Rich Asians

Emmy nominated Barry producer and scribe Jason Kim is set to pen a spinoff of Crazy Rich Asians which will center around the Gemma Chan character of Astrid Young Teo and her romance with Charlie Wu, played by Harry Shum Jr. in the original movie.

I hear that Kim came in with a dynamite pitch for the lovebirds’ story, and Warner Bros. swooned for it. The project is in early development.

Note, the Crazy Rich Asians sequel remains in development, and it’s being penned by Amy Wang. Both the spin-off and Crazy Rich Asians sequel will be tied to Kevin Kwan’s second book in the trilogy, China Rich Girlfriend. That book, in addition to covering Astrid and Charlie’s relationship, follows the Constance Wu and Henry Golding characters, Rachel and Nick, on a trip to Shanghai to find the former’s birth father.

Astrid is the newly single cousin of Nick Young (Henry Golding’s character), and in the Kwan books, Charlie Wu is her first love. They were previously engaged, but Astrid’s parents broke them up as they didn’t see Charlie as a suitable husband. Astrid is known for great beauty and impeccable fashion sense.

In the Jon M. Chu directed movie, Astrid learns that her husband Michael (Pierre Png) has been seeing a mistress. She reconnects with Charlie after they run into each other at Nick and Rachel’s engagement party.

Crazy Rich Asians repped the first Hollywood studio movie since 1993’s The Joy Luck Club to star an all-Westernized Asian ensemble. The movie made waves at the box office, debuting to $35.2M over 5-days and minting $174.5M domestic, $238.5M WW. The movie received a feature cast ensemble nomination from SAG, won Best Comedy at the Critics Choice Awards, and received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy/Musical as well as a nod for Comedy or Musical Actress Constance Wu.

Gemma Chan, Nina Yang Bongiovi Developing Anna May Wong Biopic With Working Title Films
admin - Mar 30, 2022 Alerts , News , Projects

Tony winner David Henry Hwang is writing the screenplay, adapted from Graham Russell Gao Hodges’ biography of the cinematic pioneer.

Hollywood’s first Chinese American movie star is finally getting the spotlight, a century after her heyday.

Gemma Chan and producer Nina Yang Bongiovi are teaming with Working Title Films to develop a biopic of Anna May Wong, the golden age icon whose career brought her international recognition even as she continued to face opportunity limitations in the industry and other forms of prejudice and discrimination.

The Eternals and Crazy Rich Asians star (whose 2021 Met Gala look, seen above, was an homage to Wong) will portray the legend and also executive produce. Yang Bongiovi, whose Significant Productions was most recently behind Passing, will produce alongside Working Title co-chairs Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. Working Title’s recent releases include Joe Wright’s period romance Cyrano starring Peter Dinklage and Channel 4 and Peacock’s Muslim punk-rock series We Are Lady Parts.

“Anna May Wong was a trailblazer, an icon and a woman ahead of her time,” said Chan in a statement. “Her talent and her exploration of her art both in and outside of the U.S. was groundbreaking — and the challenges and prejudice she faced in the early 20th century as an actress speak directly to the conversations and the world we are navigating today.”

David Henry Hwang, the first Asian American playwright to win a Tony (in 1988 for M. Butterfly), is penning the screenplay, adapted from Graham Russell Gao Hodges’ 2012 biography, Anna May Wong: From Laundryman’s Daughter to Hollywood Legend. Wong’s niece Anna Wong is serving as a consultant on the film.

Gemma Chan Chose Her “Grungy” Louis Vuitton Show Look Because It Makes Her Feel Powerful
admin - Mar 22, 2022 News

Gemma Chan is in Paris for a whirlwind trip to see the Louis Vuitton autumn/winter 2022 presentation. The landscape looks a little different and the mood a touch more sombre than usual given the current climate. “It feels surreal to be at a fashion show,” says the British-Asian actor, who is unfailingly polite despite the fact she is extremely jet-lagged. Having wrapped on a two-month job in Thailand, she jetted home to London for one night for her nephew’s birthday. Now she finds herself in France and, like everyone else, is finding the unfolding situation in Ukraine increasingly desperate. “The world is in chaos,” she shares. “It’s hard to find the words, but it’s all anyone’s talking about.”

To enter the fashion fray for a day, Chan and her stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray chose a Louis Vuitton look that would make her feel powerful. “It’s a sort of cape situation,” she says of her all-black leather, lace and velvet ensemble (look 27 from spring/summer 2022). “It’s grungy with a hint of punk, and the LV Moonlight boots are very comfortable.”

The Eternals star’s make-up artist Hiromi Ueda, who Gemma met on her British Vogue cover shoot, decided on “a bit of an eye”, while hairstylist David Delicourt did an undone ponytail for a “classic French look with easy texture”. “There was a lot going on with the outfit, so we decided to keep the beauty quite simple,” says Chan, a consummate professional who looked undeniably polished, not so much as a hint of the last 48 hours on her flawless skin.

Nicolas Ghesquière’s latest collection, shown against the majesty of the statues inside the Musée d’Orsay, gave Chan and her front row friends, Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas, a glimmer of joy during what can feel like a hopeless time. “Everything Nicolas does feels so fresh,” asserts Gemma. “Some of the looks feel so bold that you think they will be tricky to wear, but actually they make you feel so strong. I love what he does.” [Source]
